Graphcore is opening new opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning through its semiconductor technology. When it came to producing the casing for its ground-breaking AI chips, the company sought a partner who could deliver on the exacting design and engineering requirements for this precision application.
FRP employed its Full-Service Rapid Manufacturing (FSRM) process to accelerate the production of the metal casework and plastic tiles to the tight tolerances specified, including minimal draft for the injection moulded components.
As well as being able to realise Graphcore’s unique designs, the right-first-time accuracy of the FSRM process meant Graphcore was able to avoid additional development time and cost in the long term.
“Graphcore’s Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU) represents a significant shift in the chip industry for AI and other applications. To reinforce this difference, our casework was designed in bright colours with multiple elements to make a real statement. FRP were recommended to us as the right partner to develop and deliver the precision manufacturing combination of plastic injection moulded tiles and metal casework. FRP’s Full-Service Rapid Manufacturing (FSRM) process meant that we could launch our product from a single set of tooling, saving us time and money. Our investors and customers are delighted with the result, as are we”.
